Born in Wichita, Kansas, Derek exudes Midwestern charm, loyalty, and a strong work ethic. When I first met him, I didn’t think such a combination was possible, but after visiting Wichita, I learned that his loving family and great teachers at East High instilled a strong sense of good morals as the foundation for the man he is today. During his childhood, Derek excelled in music, cross country, and academics. The latter afforded him a summer trip to Cambridge, England, during high school and gave him a taste for foreign cultures. His interest in foreign service led him to Georgetown University, where he graduated magna cum laude. However, Derek became interested in becoming a lawyer and studied again at Georgetown to pursue his career. After finishing his law degree and a master’s in tax law with high honors, Derek found a great position with Baker & McKenzie in Chicago.
And this is how Derek found his way to Chicago and to me.
